I was unemployed, job hunting and I was seeing little momentum with the traditional job searching advice. Here’s how I went from unemployed to switching industries, roles and launched a new career path. I share exactly what I did and how it changed my career!
When my role became redundant, I saw it as an opportunity. An opportunity to change industries, jobs, and learn new skills. Little did I know at the time, that finding a job in the current job landscape would be so challenging! Finding job openings, applying, interviewing and receiving a job offer just doesn’t cut it anymore.
You don’t have to face a career change on your own!
My first job, I signed the Friday before I nearly left Switzerland for good. I was desperately looking for a job, doing copious amounts of applications, trying to get invited to interviews to land something that would extend my working permit and allow me to stay in Switzerland and that I realised later, cost me. I wasn’t in a strong position to negotiate salary, benefits or to advocate and position myself and my skillset. This was a hard lesson learned – never to undersell myself again.
After a couple of years in this job, I realised I was not feeling appreciated, fulfilled or happy. I couldn’t see myself doing this for the foreseeable future. I mustered up all the strength and courage I had and took a leap. I quit my job without a replacement. I didn’t know what would come next but what I did know is that I couldn’t continue like this. I applied for new opportunities and landed a great job in the sports industry in football technology and innovation. I relocated from Lausanne to Zurich. This is only one part of my story, I have been evolving, growing and reinventing my career for years now.
Fast forward to today, I have since moved countries and cities dozens of times and have pivoted from the sports industry to the telecommunications industry. This was by no means an easy career transition. Making changes never is. I have chosen to double down on myself by expanding my skillset, my network and growing out of my comfort zone. It’s a process, one of letting go of something, an older version of yourself perhaps and making space for something new – your bold new career. I am here to tell you that, the career change that you desire is within your reach, and I am here to support you on your journey.
